Of course with MIDI sent over USB cables, all of this is a history lesson. But it's not obvious that you still have to connect OUT to IN unless somebody tells you! Somebody decided to label the plugs on the cable IN and OUT, corresponding to how the "real" sockets would have been labelled. You always connected the cables from OUT to IN, which made sense because information was being sent out of one box and into another one.Ĭomputers never had standard MIDI connectors, but used special "adaptor cables" instead.
On "old school" (non-computerized) MIDI equipment, the SOCKETS were labelled IN and OUT, and the CABLES were not labelled at all. That might seem the logical thing to do, but it's wrong.
